Champions League Matchday 1: Bayern Five, PSG Six, and Real Madrid's Narrow Win Over Inter
The 2026/27 Champions League league phase opened across three nights, 8-10 September 2026, with all 36 clubs playing once. The round produced two six-goal winners, one genuine heavyweight fixture decided by a single goal, and an away win in Naples that will look significant in January (UEFA).

What the round actually told us
The English clubs travelled well. City won at Porto without conceding, Villa took three goals at Brugge, Arsenal won at Napoli, Liverpool beat Atlético at home and United dispatched Sabah. Five sides, five wins — and three of them away from home against seeded or semi-seeded opposition.
Madrid 2-1 Inter was the only fixture between two former winners, and it produced the narrowest margin of the night. In an eight-game league phase, a one-goal home win over a direct rival is worth more than its scoreline: it banks three points against an opponent who is competing for the same top-eight positions.
Como 4-1 Leipzig is the result to remember. A debutant-level side putting four past a Bundesliga club is the kind of outlier the 36-team format was designed to produce — more fixtures between clubs who never used to meet, and more scope for the seeding to be wrong.
Why the format makes matchday 1 matter less than it looks
Each club plays eight matches, four home and four away, against eight different opponents. The league phase runs from 8 September 2026 to 27 January 2027, with matchdays on 13/14 October, 20/21 October, 3/4 November, 24/25 November, 8/9 December, 19/20 January and the simultaneous final round on 27 January (UEFA).
One round is therefore one-eighth of the sample, and the table after matchday 1 is sorted largely by goal difference. PSG’s 6-1 and Bayern’s 5-0 put them at the top of a table that means almost nothing until three or four rounds have been played — but goal difference is a genuine tiebreaker at the end, so those margins are not entirely cosmetic.
The structural point: the top eight go straight to the last 16; places 9-24 enter a knockout play-off round; below that, elimination. The difference between eighth and ninth is two extra ties in February, which is why clubs chase margins in November that look excessive at the time.
What to watch on matchday 2
The next round falls on 13 and 14 October 2026, after an international break. Sides that opened with a heavy win — PSG, Bayern, Barcelona — face the same question every year: whether the margin reflected quality or the draw. Como and Lens, both of whom took points nobody expected, face the opposite one.
