EA Sports FC 27 Arrives 25 September 2026: The Grounds, Ultimate Team Packs and Where the Gambling Line Sits
EA has confirmed EA Sports FC 27 for 25 September 2026, with early access from 18 September for Ultimate and Ultimate Plus edition buyers (EA’s official editions and release dates page). Pre-orders opened on 23 July 2026. It is the fourth title since the FIFA licence split, and it lands in the first post-World-Cup autumn — a commercially loaded moment for football games.
Two things are worth writing about: what is actually confirmed in the game, and the pack mechanic that keeps football games inside a live regulatory argument.
Confirmed dates and editions
| Edition | Pre-order window | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate Plus | 23 July - 31 August 2026 | Up to 7 days early (from 18 Sept), most FC Points, Premium Passes S1-S5 |
| Ultimate | From 23 July (early bird to 31 Aug, regular to 24 Sept) | Up to 7 days early, Season 1 Premium Pass |
| Standard | 23 July - 24 September 2026 | Launch day, 25 September |
| FC 27 Lite | — | Free, from 25 September 16:00 UTC |
Platforms: PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Steam and the EA App. Ultimate Plus is not sold on Nintendo platforms or the Epic Games Store.
The headline new feature is The Grounds, a social hub for kickabouts and Clubs activity, restricted to current-generation hardware — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC. Career Mode gets dynamic OVR boosts and a reworked transfer market; Ultimate Team gets additional evolution slots and Manager Live challenge creation. That is the confirmed feature list from EA’s own materials. Anything beyond it circulating in July was not announced.
The FIFA name is now somewhere else entirely
Worth noting for readers who still search “FIFA 27.” The name is not on this game and will not be. Since the 2022 split, FIFA has pursued a multi-partner digital strategy rather than a single simulation rival: FIFA Rivals, a free-to-play mobile title built with Mythical Games that passed 2.5 million downloads after launch and uses blockchain-based player trading, plus a Netflix-exclusive simulation built by Delphi Interactive timed to the 2026 World Cup (SportsPro analysis).
Reports that FIFA and 2K came close to a full simulation partnership describe talks that collapsed over timing: FIFA wanted a title out in the World Cup window, 2K wanted longer to build a deep simulation. Treat that as reported, not confirmed by either party.
The practical outcome is that there is no FIFA-branded console simulation competing with FC 27 this autumn.
Ultimate Team packs and the regulatory line
Football Ultimate Team is the reason EA’s football titles appear in gambling-policy documents at all. A pack is a paid randomised reward: you buy with FC Points or in-game currency, and you receive players drawn against undisclosed probabilities weighted by rarity.
Where that sits legally in 2026:
- United Kingdom. The Gambling Commission’s position is that where in-game items are confined to the game and cannot be cashed out, a loot box “is unlikely to be caught as a licensable gambling activity” under the Gambling Act 2005. Following a 22-month call for evidence, the Government confirmed in 2022 that loot boxes would not be banned or brought under the Act, opting for an industry working group on player protection instead (House of Commons Library, CBP-8498).
- The Netherlands — EA won this case. In March 2022 the Dutch Council of State ruled that FUT packs are not a standalone game of chance: they form part of a game of skill rather than an independent wagering product, and the secondary market centres on whole accounts rather than individual pack contents. The Gaming Authority’s penalty against EA was overturned (CMS Law-Now). Anyone telling you FUT packs are banned in the Netherlands is four years out of date.
- Belgium. The Gaming Commission concluded in 2018 that paid loot boxes are games of chance requiring a licence. In December 2024 it acknowledged the generalised ban “proved difficult to enforce,” and independent auditing has found paid random items still widely reachable by Belgian players.
- PEGI. Announced 12 March 2026: from June 2026, newly submitted games containing paid random items — explicitly including card packs — default to a minimum PEGI 16 rating, “and in some cases they can be a PEGI 18” (PEGI).
- Brazil. Law 15,211/2025, the “ECA Digital,” enforceable from 17 March 2026, prohibits loot boxes in games accessible to minors, with fines up to BRL 50 million per violation.
- United States. No federal rule. In February 2026 New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Valve, an action that turns on whether virtual items carry real monetary value through secondary markets.
What a pack does not give you that a slot does
This is the comparison worth making explicitly, and it runs in the direction most people do not expect.
A UKGC-licensed slot must publish its return to player percentage. Ultimate Team packs do not publish an equivalent expected value, and the odds EA does disclose are pack-probability tables, not a monetary return figure — because there is no monetary return by design. A licensed casino must offer deposit limits, session reminders, and cross-operator self-exclusion via GAMSTOP. A game store offers a platform-level spending control at best.
So the honest framing is: a pack is not a bet, because you cannot win money. It is also not protected like a bet, because none of the consumer safeguards attached to regulated gambling apply. Both of those statements are true at once, and the second one is the one that gets left out.
If you want the arithmetic of how randomised-reward systems are designed to feel, our slot volatility explainer is directly transferable — high-variance reward schedules behave the same way whether the payout is cash or a card.
What to watch between now and launch
- What rating FC 27 actually receives. It is a new submission arriving after the June 2026 cutover, so the PEGI 16 floor for paid random items applies on its face. EA’s football titles have historically been rated PEGI 3.
- Whether the Belgian build diverges from the global one, given the Gaming Commission’s 2018 position and its 2024 admission that enforcing it has not worked.
- Whether the UK position moves. The Government declined to regulate loot boxes in 2022 and routed the issue to an industry working group rather than the Gambling Act. Nothing has formally reopened that.
Frequently asked questions
When does EA Sports FC 27 release?
25 September 2026, with early access from 18 September for Ultimate and Ultimate Plus edition buyers. Pre-orders opened 23 July 2026.
Is there a FIFA 27 game?
No. FIFA no longer licenses its name to EA. FIFA’s own digital strategy runs through FIFA Rivals, a free-to-play mobile game with Mythical Games, and a Netflix-exclusive simulation built by Delphi Interactive — not a console rival to FC 27.
Are Ultimate Team packs gambling?
Not under UK law as it stands. The Gambling Commission’s position is that items confined to a game and not cashable out are unlikely to be a licensable gambling activity under the Gambling Act 2005, and the Government confirmed in 2022 it would not regulate loot boxes under the Act. The Dutch Council of State reached a similar conclusion about FUT packs specifically in March 2022. Belgium takes the opposite view.
Are FIFA/FC packs banned in the Netherlands?
No. The Dutch Council of State overturned the regulator’s penalty against EA in March 2022, ruling that FUT packs are not a standalone game of chance because they sit inside a game of skill. The claim that they are banned there is a common and outdated error.
Does FC 27 get an age rating change because of packs?
From June 2026, PEGI applies a minimum 16 rating to newly submitted games containing paid random items, and card packs are explicitly named. FC 27 is a new submission arriving after that cutover.

Responsible gambling
Spending inside a game is denominated in points, not pounds, which makes it much harder to notice. If you buy packs, set a platform spending cap before the season starts rather than after.
