Arsenal and Manchester City Both on 12: The Premier League After Four Matchweeks
Four matchweeks into the 2026-27 Premier League season, Arsenal and Manchester City are level at the top on 12 points from 12 — and the two clubs immediately behind them are both promoted sides (Wikipedia).

Two perfect starts, in different circumstances
Arsenal and City have both won four from four. City did it under Enzo Maresca, in his first season after Pep Guardiola’s departure — a transition that most predicted would cost points early, and so far has not. Arsenal did it while also winning away at Napoli in the Champions League.
The honest caveat: four matches is four matches. Two clubs on maximum points in mid-September have, between them, produced roughly a dozen genuinely informative data points about a 38-game season.
The promoted clubs are the story
Hull City, fourth on eight points, are level with Leeds and ahead of Chelsea, Liverpool and Brighton. Hull returned after nine years, alongside Coventry City (back after 25) and Ipswich Town (after one).
A promoted side in the top four in September usually regresses; the pattern is well established and there is no reason to assume otherwise. But eight points from four games is eight points banked, and the value of an early cushion for a promoted club is disproportionate — it is points taken before opponents have worked you out.
Brighton, meanwhile, have produced the two most emphatic scorelines of the opening month: 4-0 at home to Aston Villa and 5-0 away at Coventry City on 13 September.
The managerial reset nobody has fully priced
Four of the historic top six changed manager before this season:
- Manchester City — Enzo Maresca replaces Pep Guardiola
- Chelsea — Xabi Alonso
- Liverpool — Andoni Iraola
- Newcastle United — Matthias Jaissle
That is an unusual concentration. Managerial change usually shows up in results between matchweeks 8 and 15, once the initial bounce fades and the squad meets a system it was not built for. Anyone drawing conclusions from September about any of these four appointments is reading the bounce.
Bruno Fernandes’ three goals in Manchester United’s 5-2 win over Ipswich on 30 August belong in the same bracket: a real performance, on too small a sample to project.
The season’s structural change

What the next month decides
