Bundesliga 2026/27 Season Start: Fixtures, UK Coverage and How the Markets Are Priced

Checked on 9 August 2026. Dates come from Bundesliga and DFL publications, cross-checked against a second listing, with sources and retrieval dates at the foot of the page. We publish no odds here, because a price written now is not the price you will be offered on matchday.

Germany’s top flight starts later than usual this year. The 2026 World Cup occupied the summer, so the 64th Bundesliga season opens at the end of August and runs to late May with the winter break still intact.

Eighteen clubs, 34 matchdays, 306 matches, plus the two-legged relegation play-off between the 16th-placed Bundesliga side and the third-placed club from the second tier. That play-off is the structural difference from England and Spain, and it is the reason Bundesliga relegation markets behave differently: finishing 16th is not relegation, it is a coin-flip fixture in late May.

On precision. Only the opener’s kick-off time is settled beyond doubt. The DFL sets exact times for matchdays 1 to 4 in mid-July, but the listings we retrieved on 9 August 2026 disagreed with each other on the individual slots for the other eight matches, so we are not printing times we cannot double-source. The standard slots are 15:30 and 18:30 CEST on Saturday and 15:30, 17:30 and 19:30 CEST on Sunday. Check the official fixture list before staking.

Champions, promoted clubs and one club with no history at all

Bayern Munich arrive as champions after a domestic double in 2025/26, their 35th German title and 21st DFB-Pokal.

Three clubs came up:

  • Schalke 04, second-tier champions, back in the Bundesliga.
  • SV Elversberg, second-tier runners-up, in the top flight for the first time in the club’s history.
  • SC Paderborn, through the promotion play-off.

Elversberg is the pricing problem of the season’s opening weeks. A club with no Bundesliga record at all cannot be modelled from top-flight data, so the price is built from second-tier performance adjusted by a league-strength factor. That is a legitimate method with a wide error band, and the error band applies to your own view of them as much as to the operator’s. The first five matchdays are the period in which that uncertainty is largest and, by definition, least resolved.

Schalke’s return also produces a piece of trivia that means nothing to a model and a lot to atmosphere: for the first time since 2017/18 the top ten clubs of the all-time Bundesliga table are in the division at the same time.

Where to watch in the UK

Sky Sports holds live Bundesliga rights in the UK and Ireland for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons, and the BBC streams a Friday night match across the same period. In Germany the split is Sky and WOW for Friday, Saturday singles and the Saturday evening top match, DAZN for the Saturday conference feed and all Sunday matches, with SAT.1 showing selected matches free-to-air including the opener.

The German split matters for UK viewers only in one respect: the Saturday 15:30 CEST block is five matches at once, which is 14:30 BST, and a multi-match block is the single most common trigger for unplanned in-play staking.

What changed for 2026/27

IFAB law changes took effect on 1 July 2026:

  • A visible five-second countdown on goal kicks and throw-ins, with a corner awarded against a goalkeeper who delays a goal kick.
  • Ten seconds for a substituted player to leave the field.
  • The “only the captain” protocol becomes mandatory in all competitions.

Corner totals and cards markets carry the exposure. There is no Bundesliga data on the new rules yet, because the season has not started. Betting corners or cards in August means betting into a transition period with no sample.

The market board

Season-long markets: title, top four, relegation and the play-off place, top goalscorer. Weekly markets: match odds, Asian handicap, totals, both teams to score, corners, cards, player shots and player scorer markets, plus in-play.

Two things determine what those cost you.

Overround. Convert every price in a market to implied probability and add them up. The sum exceeds 100 per cent, and the excess is the operator’s margin. A three-way match market usually carries a few percentage points. An 18-runner title market or a full top-scorer list carries much more, because every extra runner is another place to build margin in. The conversion arithmetic is in our guide to how betting odds work.

Liquidity of the exit. A title or relegation position placed in August is locked until it resolves. Cash-out is not a guaranteed exit at a fair price, it is a discretionary offer the operator makes on its own terms, and offers tend to tighten precisely when a position becomes valuable. The mechanics are in our live betting guide, and staking under that constraint is covered in the bankroll management guide.

Numbers for context

  • Germany’s legal gambling market produced roughly €14.4bn in gross gaming revenue in 2024, of which about €4bn, some 28 per cent, came from operators regulated by the national regulator GGL (GGL activity report for 2024, retrieved 9 August 2026).
  • German sports betting carries a 5.3 per cent turnover tax on the stake under the Racing and Lottery Act. It is levied on the operator, and different operators pass it on differently, which is a useful reminder that the same nominal price can cost different amounts in different jurisdictions.
  • UK online gross gambling yield for January to March 2026 was £1.55bn, up 7 per cent year on year, with bets and spins up 7 per cent to 26.8 billion (Gambling Commission market overview published 21 May 2026, retrieved 9 August 2026).

Frequently asked questions

When does the Bundesliga 2026/27 season start?

Friday 28 August 2026, with Bayern Munich against VfB Stuttgart at 20:30 CEST, which is 19:30 BST. Matchday 1 runs to Sunday 30 August, and the season ends on 22 May 2027.

Which clubs were promoted to the Bundesliga?

Schalke 04 as second-tier champions, SV Elversberg as runners-up and in the top flight for the first time, and SC Paderborn through the promotion play-off.

How can I watch the Bundesliga in the UK?

Sky Sports holds live rights for the UK and Ireland across 2025/26 and 2026/27, and the BBC streams a Friday night fixture in the same period.

Why does Bundesliga relegation work differently?

The bottom two go down automatically, but 16th place plays a two-legged play-off against the third-placed club from the second tier, on 27/28 May and 31 May/1 June 2027. Relegation markets therefore have an extra resolution step.

Why are eight matchday 1 kick-off times missing here?

Because the sources we checked on 9 August 2026 disagreed on them. Only the opening match time is confirmed across sources. The binding times are in the official DFL fixture list.

Is there a winter break?

Yes, from 20 December 2026 to 8 January 2027, which remains a structural difference from the Premier League calendar.

Responsible gambling

The Saturday afternoon block puts five matches on at once. Watching five games is entertainment. Holding a position in five games is five decisions taken in the time it usually takes to make one.

Set the stake before the block starts, and do not add to it while it is running.
