Champions League 2026/27 League Phase: Format, Calendar and Matchday 1 in Full

The league phase of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League opened on Tuesday 8 September 2026 and runs to Wednesday 27 January 2027. Thirty-six clubs, one table, eight matches each.
How the format works
Each club plays eight matches — four at home, four away — against eight different opponents, drawn from four seeding pots. There are no groups. Every result feeds a single 36-team table.
What that table decides:
- Positions 1-8 — direct qualification to the round of 16.
- Positions 9-24 — a two-legged knockout play-off round in February, with the higher seed at home in the second leg.
- Positions 25-36 — eliminated. No parachute into a secondary competition.
The practical consequence is that the margin between eighth and ninth is two extra ties in a congested February. It is the reason clubs chase goal difference in November in ways that look excessive at the time — goal difference is a genuine tiebreaker in a single table of 36.

Matchday 8 is played simultaneously across all 18 fixtures — the design feature that makes the final round of the league phase the one night of the season where the qualification picture moves everywhere at once.
Note the gap: matchdays 6 and 7 sit either side of a six-week break. Squads that look deep in December are assessed again in January under very different conditions.

What the opening round established
Five English clubs, five wins, three of them away. City won at Porto without conceding, Villa at Brugge, Arsenal at Napoli.
Two six-goal margins. PSG’s 6-1 and Bayern’s 5-0 put both at the top of a table sorted largely on goal difference — worth little in September, potentially decisive in January.
Como 4-1 Leipzig is the result that justifies the format. Fixtures between clubs who never used to meet are the whole point of the 36-team table, and they produce exactly this kind of outlier.
Real Madrid 2-1 Inter was the only meeting of two former winners, and the narrowest result of that night. Three points taken directly off a rival for the same top-eight positions counts double in a single table.
Reading the table before matchday 4
One round is one-eighth of the sample, and the early table is a goal-difference ranking wearing a league table’s clothes. The first point at which the standings describe anything durable is after matchday 4 on 3/4 November, when every club has played half its fixtures and the strength of each individual draw starts to average out.
Until then the only genuinely load-bearing facts are the points themselves — and, for the clubs who took them away from home, the fact that they did it on the road.
