Bundesliga 2026/27 Opening Round Review: The Season Started Without the League
Checked on 25 August 2026. One thing first, stated plainly because most previews will not: Bundesliga matchday 1 has not been played yet. It opens on Friday 28 August with Bayern Munich against VfB Stuttgart. What Germany’s top flight has already produced is a competitive opening weekend of a different kind — the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup and the first round of the DFB-Pokal — and that is what this page reviews. Every score below comes from a match report cross-checked against a second source, listed with retrieval dates at the foot of the page. No odds are published here.
That distinction matters for anyone reading form. English and Spanish league football has a round of real data. German league football has none, and what it has instead — one Supercup and 31 cup ties, most of them against lower-division opposition — is the kind of evidence that looks like a sample and is not one.
What has actually been played
Supercup: Borussia Dortmund 1–2 Bayern Munich
Bayern won the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup 2–1 at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday 22 August. Brown put Bayern ahead on 28 minutes with a clean strike from the edge of the box, Michael Olise made it two before half-time after a driving run, and Fábio Silva pulled one back for Dortmund on 75 minutes after good work by Svensson. The champions beat their closest challenger, away, in the first competitive Klassiker of the season.
A Supercup is a real trophy and a poor predictor. It is one match between two sides at different stages of pre-season load, and its winner has gone on to both title romps and title collapses. What it does establish is narrower: both squads are functional, and Bayern’s new-look attack produced two goals away at their principal rival.
DFB-Pokal first round: two top-flight casualties
The first round ran from 21 to 24 August, with two ties held back to 1 and 2 September — including, notably, both Bayern’s visit to VfL Osnabrück and Dortmund’s tie at Hamburg-Eimsbütteler BC. Selected results:

The headlines are the two eliminations. 1. FC Heidenheim lost 5–2 at SSV Jeddeloh, a fourth-tier club, which is the kind of result that ends up in end-of-year reviews. FC St. Pauli lost 2–0 at Rot-Weiss Essen of the 3. Liga. And VfL Wolfsburg survived on penalties at fifth-tier Altglienicke after a 3–3 draw, which is an escape rather than a win.
The rest of the top flight did what favourites are supposed to do, mostly by wide margins: Stuttgart, Leverkusen, Hoffenheim, Leipzig and Freiburg all won by four or more. Promoted Elversberg won 3–1 at Duisburg, and Hamburger SV — back in the Bundesliga — won 3–0 at Verl.
What a cup round does and does not tell you
A first-round Pokal tie is played away at the minnow’s ground, often on a pitch and in an atmosphere designed to produce exactly what happened to Heidenheim. The base rate for at least one Bundesliga club falling in round one is high in any season. So the honest reading is asymmetric: a routine win tells you close to nothing, and a defeat tells you something — but less than it appears to, and mostly about that specific afternoon.
Where it does touch the league season: Heidenheim and St. Pauli have lost their most realistic route to European qualification money and now play a 34-match season with nothing but the league in it. Wolfsburg’s 120 minutes plus penalties is a real load difference five days before their opening league fixture. These are facts about calendars and squads, not about quality.
Matchday 1: what is confirmed
The opening fixture is settled: Bayern Munich v VfB Stuttgart, Friday 28 August, 20:30 CEST (19:30 BST). The other eight pairings are fixed for the weekend of 29 and 30 August, with the DFL’s exact slot allocation the binding source:

What this shifts in season-long markets
Title markets have exactly one new data point — the Supercup — and it confirmed the existing order rather than disturbing it. Bayern beat Dortmund away. A position taken now still locks capital until May against a champion that has won the round it was asked to win.
Relegation and promoted-club markets got nothing from the weekend that a model can use. Elversberg’s cup win came against second-tier opposition; their real test, and the pricing problem of the season — a club with no top-flight history at all — starts against Leverkusen on matchday 1.
Cup outright markets did move, mechanically: two top-flight runners are out before the seeded rounds, and the draw’s value shifted toward everyone in their quarter of the bracket. That is arithmetic, not opinion.
