Read the top and the bottom of that table together. It moved from “give me something for nothing” to “give me something without conditions”, a harder question for the industry to answer, because the conditions are where the offer’s cost sits.

Two gaps in that table are deliberate and worth reading as findings rather than omissions.

Our index records the multiple that applies to the cash bonus. It does not record, for any of these six, whether the same multiple attaches to free-spin winnings. Those are separate terms in a UK operator’s bonus conditions and they frequently differ — a split offer where the spins pay cash and the match carries 35x is a common shape, and so is the reverse. We will not publish a spins multiple inferred from a bonus multiple; that substitution is exactly what turns a comparison table into a fiction.

Why 35x turns a free spin into a deferred deposit

Take a spins round that returns £20 in winnings. Under a genuine 0x structure, £20 is credited as cash and can be withdrawn. Under a 35x structure applied to those winnings, the £20 is credited as bonus funds carrying £700 of required turnover before anything converts.

Run £700 of turnover through a slot at 96% return to player and the expected loss is £28. The requirement, in other words, costs more in expectation than the winnings it is attached to. That is the arithmetic behind the whole category, and it is why “free” is the wrong word for a spin whose output is gated: the player is not being given £20, they are being lent £20 against a commitment to stake £700. The £20 and the 96% are illustrative inputs, chosen because they are round; the 35x is the multiple recorded against four of the six operators above. Substitute your own numbers and the shape holds — multiply winnings by multiple, take 4% of the product, compare it to the winnings. Above a multiple of roughly 25, the expected cost of clearing exceeds the amount being cleared.

The UK stake caps have made this slower without making it cheaper. Since 9 April 2025 the maximum online slot stake at a UK-licensed site is £5 per spin, and since 21 May 2025 it is £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24. Wagering multiples did not fall to compensate. That £700 playthrough is a minimum of 140 spins at the £5 ceiling, and 350 spins for a 22-year-old — which is why, in practice, the term that catches people is not the multiple but the expiry sitting next to it. Three classes of spins offer, and how to tell them apart

Almost every free-spins promotion in the UK market is one of three structures, and the banner language is nearly identical across all three, so the classification has to be done in the terms.

Class one: winnings paid as cash. Zero playthrough — the spins produce whatever they produce and it is withdrawable immediately, subject to identity checks. This is the structure the search term is asking for, and the one we cannot currently evidence at any UKGC licensee in our index. Where we have seen it, in the survey behind our no wagering bonuses guide, it sat in the Curaçao segment outside GAMSTOP — regulatory protection traded for a bonus term, which is not a trade we would make.

Class two: wagering on the winnings only. The spins are free to take, but what they produce is bonus credit carrying a multiple. The most common case, and the cost is calculable the moment you know the multiple and whether the clock starts at credit or at first use.

Class three: wagering on bonus and deposit. The multiple applies to the promotional value and the money you put in, roughly doubling the playthrough for the same headline number. Nothing about that is prohibited and UK licensees do disclose it. The banner is describing one half of the promotion.

The four terms that decide what a spins offer is worth

Maximum bet during wagering. Commonly £5 at UK-licensed operators. Exceed it, usually by accident, and the bonus and everything won from it is typically void — a clause that costs more players their winnings than any multiple does. It applies the whole time a bonus is active, not only on the promoted game.

Expiry. Days for a matched bonus, often hours for a spins round.
